Gutter leaf guards

Fewer ladders, fewer overflows

If your house sits under oaks, maples or pines, the gutters fill up again a few weeks after they’re cleaned. Water spills over the front, soaks the fascia and pools at the foundation, and in winter a blocked gutter helps ice dams form.

Gutter guards keep out leaves and larger debris while still letting water flow freely. Paired with properly sloped gutters and secure hangers, a good leaf guard system can significantly reduce clogs and overflowing edges. It won’t make gutters maintenance-free, and we won’t tell you it will, but it turns frequent clean-outs into an occasional check.

How we fit them

Six steps, done in order

A guard on a dirty, sagging or leaking gutter just hides the problem, so we fix the gutter first.

01

Clean & flush

Every run cleared and the downspouts flushed, so nothing is trapped under the guard.

Clean

02

Inspect & repair

Leaking seams resealed and loose or rusted fasteners replaced before anything goes on top.

Repair

03

Check the pitch

Low spots and back-pitched runs realigned, so water flows to the outlets instead of sitting under the guard.

Flow

04

Measure & cut

Guards cut to each run, with corners and end caps fitted rather than left open.

Fit

05

Fasten securely

Fixed to the gutter so wind and sliding snow can’t lift them out of place.

Secure

06

Water test

Water run through each section to confirm it drains before we pack up.

Choosing a guard

Four kinds of guard, compared

The right one depends on what’s growing over your roof. We’ll recommend one after we’ve seen your trees.

General guidance only; performance varies by product and installation. Pine needles and seed pods are the hardest test for any guard.

Questions

Leaf guard questions

Gutter guard installation starts from $450. The final price depends on how many feet of gutter you have, the number of corners and the type of guard. If the gutters need cleaning first, that starts from $120.

No, and be wary of anyone who says so. Guards cut down on how often gutters need clearing, but fine debris and shingle grit still build up over time. Most homes with guards need an occasional check rather than spring and fall clean-outs.

Needles are the hardest test for any guard. Fine micro-mesh handles them best; open screens and foam inserts tend to trap them. If you’re under pines, we’ll recommend a guard to suit.

A clogged or badly fitted guard can. That’s why we clean, repair and check the pitch first, and water-test every run before we leave.

Usually, yes, as long as the gutters are sound. If a run is sagging, leaking or rotting the fascia behind it, we’ll tell you and price the repair or a new gutter installation before fitting guards.

Indirectly. A gutter full of wet leaves freezes solid and backs water up under the roof edge. Keeping gutters clear removes one cause of ice dams, though attic insulation and ventilation matter more.
